7 Spring cleaning tips

Hello, Super Parents!

As the season of renewal arrives, it’s the perfect time to give your home—and your mind—a fresh start. Spring cleaning doesn’t just have to be about dusting and scrubbing; it’s about creating a space that feels lighter, more organized, and ready for the sunny days ahead. Whether you’re juggling work, kids’ activities, and life in general, we’ve got some simple and effective tips to make spring cleaning a breeze.

1. Start with the “Three Pile” Method

Before you start scrubbing and polishing, clear some space! This easy method will help you declutter without feeling overwhelmed:

Pile 1: Keep. Items you use regularly or love.

Pile 2: Donate. Gently used items that no longer serve your family.

Pile 3: Toss. Things that are broken, expired, or just plain unnecessary.

Parent tip: Involve the kids! Give them a small task—like sorting their toys—and make it a fun competition (with prizes for the most items donated!).

2. Tackle One Room at a Time

It’s easy to feel like you need to clean the whole house in one go. But let’s be honest: that’s exhausting. Instead, focus on one room or area per day. This keeps the task manageable and lets you check things off as you go.

Room-by-room checklist:

Living Room: Dust shelves, wipe down furniture, vacuum under cushions.

Kitchen: Clean out the fridge (yes, toss those expired jars), wipe counters, disinfect high-touch areas.

Bathrooms: Scrub sinks, tubs, and toilets, wipe mirrors, change out shower curtains if needed.

Kids' Rooms: Sort through clothes, toys, and school papers. Let them choose what they want to keep.

3. Set a Timer for a Sprint

If you’re short on time (and who isn’t?), set a timer for 20-30 minutes and do a "cleaning sprint." You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time when you focus solely on the task at hand. You can always take breaks, but knowing you only have a limited time will keep you motivated!

4. Deep Clean, Don’t Just Tidy Up

Spring cleaning is a great time to go deeper than your usual weekly clean-up:

Windows: Get rid of winter grime and let in the sunshine.

Baseboards: Use a microfiber cloth to dust off all those corners and edges that tend to collect dust.

Ceiling Fans & Light Fixtures: A quick wipe down with a damp cloth can make a big difference in freshening up a room.

Parent hack: While you clean, turn on a family-friendly playlist to make it fun. Kids love a cleaning dance party!

5. Organize the Paper Pile

Parents, we all know about the paper mountain—school papers, bills, receipts, and artwork. Take this opportunity to go through everything and file or shred what you don’t need. For kids' artwork, consider creating a memory box or even taking photos to make a digital archive!

Parent tip: Set up a filing system where important papers go. You’ll thank yourself later when everything has a place.

6. Refresh the Air and Atmosphere

As you clean, don’t forget to refresh the air in your home. Open windows (even if just for a few minutes) to let in fresh air. Use natural air fresheners like essential oils or a bowl of fresh lemons to bring in springtime scents.

7. Get the Kids Involved

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a solo task! Involve your kids by giving them age-appropriate chores like:

Sorting their clothes

Vacuuming small areas or dusting lower surfaces

Folding laundry

Pro tip: Turn it into a game with rewards or set up a chore chart for weekly cleaning, so it doesn’t all pile up next spring.
